HABITAT CREATION

Over the winter of 2022/23, Blackwell undertook earthworks to create 5ha of high-quality wetland habitat comprising a mosaic of wet reedbed in 20-30% open water and 1km of lowland ditch habitat in a single groundwater-fed basin. The new habitat consists of dry reedbed and tussocky grassland around the basin's margins to support a characteristic assemblage of vascular wetland plant and animal species. The works are part of the wider environmental mitigation measures to facilitate the development of the SZC Nuclear Power Station.

A fleet of 30 heavy earthmovers excavated 150,000m3 (equivalent to about 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools) of soil to an intricate design profile, mostly below groundwater in a very short timescale.

The excavated soils were stockpiled on land south of Ash Wood for reuse during the SZC Project.

Phase Two (Birmingham to Crewe) Hybrid Hill 2020
Atkins have employed Blackwell Earthmoving to provide mass hall materials and re-use advice for the Environmental Statement as part of the Phase Two Hybrid Bill process.

Phase Two (Crewe to Manchester) Hybrid Hill 2018 - 2019
We fulfilled a similar role as we had done previously for Atkins on Phase One on this Phase Two section, in support of the Hybrid Hill Environmental Statement.

Phase Two (Birmingham to Leeds) Route Selection 2017 - 2018
Our role was to support Mott MacDonald in route selection activities, including high level mass haul planning.

Phase Two (Birmingham to Leeds) Earthworks Appraisal 2016
We worked closely with London Bridge Associates to support Mott MacDonald in cost and methodology appraisals of key earthworks elements on the proposed Phase 2 route, including those across former opencast coal sites.

Phase One Country South Hybrid Bill 2012 - 2015
Working as Consultants to Atkins, our role was to inform the Environmental Statement as port of the Hybrid Bill on all matters relating to earthmoving, earthmoving, particularly materials re-use and mass haul. The benefits of our advice were realised in short order such that our appointment was broadened in 2013 to prepare the route-wide mass haul for the whole of Phase One for the ES.  In so doing, our earthmoving experts were subsumed into HS2’s teams in their offices in London Victoria and Canary Wharf.

Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station 2019 - 2020

The Sizewell C nuclear power station development required extensive earthworks and we were appointed by Atkins to advise principally on transportation methods to support the Development Consent Order.

Heathrow Expansion Plan 2016 - 2020

Blackwell Earthmoving were engaged by Jacobs to support the master-planning and subsequently the Development Consent Order for the Heathrow Expansion Project. Our role saw BEL's Director, Niall Fraser, appointed to the Earthworks Steering Group (comprising experts from HAL, Mace, Jacobs, Arup, Mott MacDonald, and Amec Foster Wheeler) which was tasked with setting the earthworks strategy for this, immensely challenging, earthworks project.

A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme 2016 - 2019

Blackwell Earthmoving undertook sections 4 & 5 of the scheme following the provision of earthmoving ECI advisory services in 2015/2016. To read more about our work on the A14, click here.
