A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Commercial Manager to join our Engineering and Utilities Team based over three locations in Barnsley, Knaresborough and Widnes.

Hargreaves Industrial Services Ltd are a quality assured contracting company delivering EPC turnkey projects, framework contracts and term service operation and maintenance contracts across a wide range of industrial markets in the UK.

About the Role
As Senior Commercial Manager, you will own the end to end commercial performance of projects and frameworks across our Engineering and Water divisions. You’ll ensure delivery is commercially robust, contractually compliant and financially successful—supporting operational teams to meet programme, cost and quality targets while protecting and enhancing margin.

Working within a construction environment, you’ll provide clear leadership, governance and control across all commercial activity. You’ll act as the senior commercial authority on projects, embedding best practice, strengthening commercial awareness and ensuring disciplined contract administration in line with NEC and other key contract frameworks.

You will lead the development and execution of commercial strategy to drive sustainable growth, effective risk management and long term profitability. Alongside this, you’ll build, mentor and inspire a high performing commercial team, championing professional standards and continuous improvement.

The role briefly encompasses the following:

  • Lead the commercial function across projects and frameworks, driving profitability, cash flow and cost control.
  • Oversee all pre-contract activities including tender review, commercial strategy, pricing and contract negotiation.
  • Establish and enforce robust commercial processes, including governance, reporting and approval mechanisms.
  • Maintain full contractual compliance, ensuring obligations are understood, administered and enforced.
  • Manage change control in line with contractual requirements (particularly NEC compensation events), ensuring value recovery and risk mitigation.
  • Produce accurate forecasting, cost value reconciliation (CVR) and cash flow management across all projects.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of applications for payment and ensure timely cash collection.
  • Provide commercial reporting and insight to senior leadership, enabling informed decision making.
  • Act as a key interface with clients, building strong, trusted relationships and ensuring commercial alignment.
  • Lead, develop and mentor commercial and project teams, raising overall commercial capability and awareness.
  • Identify, assess and manage commercial and contractual risks across the project lifecycle.
  • Support site teams through provision of accurate cost, valuation and contractual advice.
  • Accountable for commercial governance of major projects, ensuring robust risk management, cost control and margin protection.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills/attributes:

  • Proven track record in commercial management within construction, infrastructure or engineering sectors.
  • Fanatically competent in NEC3 and NEC4 contracts, with deep practical understanding of:
    • Compensation events
    • Early warning processes
    • Programme management
    • Payment mechanisms
    • Risk allocation and dispute avoidance
  • Strong financial acumen including cost control, forecasting and financial analysis.
  • Ability to manage and interpret complex contractual arrangements and implement best practice contract administration.
  • Excellent negotiation, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience leading and developing commercial teams within a project environment.
  • Highly analytical and detail-oriented with a structured and process-driven approach.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively at all levels of the business and with clients.
  • Proactive, resilient and commercially astute with the ability to operate under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Relevant commercial, financial or construction-related qualifications, and ideally professional accreditation (e.g., RICS, NEC PM).
