As part of a wider engineering team comprising Project Manager, Construction Manager, Senior Engineers, Engineer / Graduate Engineers, and Apprentice / Undergraduate placement Engineers, the Engineer will assist the senior staff and supervise the junior/trainee staff to ensure the site earthmoving teams have up to date information and the required documentation to allow work to proceed safely, on time and productively. They will ensure accurate records are compiled to fulfil our obligations with regard to quality assurance.

The Engineer will be expected to form a good relationship with their equivalents and upwards in the Client team, to ensure maximum co-operation and co-ordination is achieved to enable the works to progress smoothly with minimal disruption.

Good working relationships will be required with the other Blackwell team disciplines – Surveying, Commercial, Planning, Quality, and Health, Safety and Environment.

Key activities and responsibilities of the role:

  • Higher qualification in Civil Engineering, Land Surveying or related discipline
  • Good facility with basic mathematics (trigonometry and basic statistics)
  • Strength with Microsoft Excel particularly and the MS Office suite generally
  • Clear, concise, precise communication (written) of technical information
  • Engineering sketching skills (including by hand)
  • Personal time management including workload planning
  • Use of GPS survey and setting out highly desirable
  • Writing risk assessments and task briefings in collaboration with colleagues
  • Providing the QA/QC function for civil engineering works (preferably earthworks)

Essential:

  • A strong leader with the ability to empathise
  • Degree/HNC in a relevant subject or qualified by experience
  • Substantial responsibility for the operation of NEC Option C contracts
  • Considerable experience of civil engineering construction
  • A skilled negotiator
  • CSCS Card
  • Driving License

Desirable:

  • Earthworks contracting experience
  • Experience in the rail environment
  • 1 years experience working with a civils contractor in a site role including survey and set-out
