We are looking to grow our own talent, inviting new recruits into the industry, and our Company. We offer trainee schemes which work towards operating construction plant, without the need for any previous experience. All you will need is to be over 18 years of age, have a full UK driving license, and have your own transport. The trainee scheme has been a huge success over recent years with several trainees having attained their NVQ qualifications, and making a great start in their Blackwell careers. Our scheme covers a range of important modules which support our trainees to get into the industry. Initially these include Health & Safety awareness and an induction to familiarise them with the project they are going to work on. Subsequent modules will then cover practical and theory-based assessments relating to mobile plant operations. Following successful completion of these parts of the course our trainees qualify for their first, industry recognised, plant operator qualification. Further training will then be programmed to build and expand upon this solid foundation.
We also offer an apprenticeship scheme which runs over a 12 week programme through the winter period. This enables a selected number of trainees, who have performed well at the start of their career with us, to access a range of potential career opportunities depending on their ambitions.
If you would like to register your interest for our trainee and apprenticeship schemes, send us your CV at training@blackwellearth.co.uk and let us know why you would be a great addition to our team, and we will let you know when our schemes will be accepting the next intake.
A number of our colleagues have established successful management careers having joined through an entry level route. From operating, supervising and deploying our construction fleet, to managing our staff and their health and safety, there are numerous development paths for those who wish to progress in an operational role.
As a recent graduate in your discipline, you are most likely looking to join a Company which will support you at the beginning of your professional development or alternatively one which will assist you in building on your academic skills with further practical experience. We would be interested to hear from graduates who are engaged in achieving qualifications across many engineering disciplines and particularly those which lend themselves to our industry. These may include qualifications in the areas of Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Geology, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics, Project Management and Planning or other related subjects.
You may also be looking for a placement of up to 12 months to complement your ongoing academic studies. Please send us your CV for consideration along with a covering letter outlining what you could offer as a summer placement student, and what you would expect from us in return.

I am currently a third year student at Loughborough University on the MEng Civil Engineering course. I undertook a 13-week Summer Placement with in my first year and was delighted to feel a valued and important member of the team from day one. In my first placement, I experienced an Earthworks project from every angle which was immensely useful, having had no previous experience in Engineering. Since then, I have worked closely with a technology innovation project, test driven a dump truck and gained a huge amount of on-site experience which is vital for any Engineer.
Being an Earthworks company, and one that is smaller than some companies introduced to students, I felt like I might have less opportunities than some of my peers who joined larger companies, however, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Whilst I was on placement I was allowed to feel like an individual and direct my own work experience, enabling me to achieve my own academic and personal targets. I am proudly able to say that I was involved in the current largest highways project in the UK on my first summer placement and, having happily accepted sponsorship with the Company, I can see exciting opportunities available on major highway, railway and airport projects across the UK following my graduation.
