SALARY: £57,000 per annum

A vacancy has arisen for a SHEQ Manager to join our team at our Barnsley Office ensuring the business has effective systems of work that protect all our employees from the Health, Safety, environmental and Quality risks encountered whilst participating in our business and that ensure full legal compliance.

The role briefly encompasses the following duties: 

  • Ensure the business has effective systems that minimise our impact on the environment whilst conducting our business.
  • To maintain certification to BSEN ISO 45001 H&S Management, BSEN ISO 9001 for quality management system, BSEN ISO14001 for Environmental management system.
  • To ensure the business systems ensure all areas of SHE are legally compliant in all of its business and operational activities
  • The post holder will be required to establish strong working relationships with members of the business leadership team in order or develop a clear understanding of the business SHEQ challenges that are a consequence of the planned business activities.
  • The post holder will be require to develop and enable delivery, through the line, of SHEQ plans that mitigate the risks associated with the planned business activities.
  • Able to provide SHEQ advice and support in easily understood ways to wide ranging operations and global cultures
  • Based at Barnsley, however prepared to operate nationwide to support all contracts
  • Small number of direct reports, Compliance Auditor and H&S coordinators.
  • Ability to influence all levels of the business to embrace a positive SHEQ culture


The ideal candidate will possess the following skills/experience/ attributes:

  • Familiarity with managing hazards and risks associated with a labour intensive process/production/materials handling/ transport/construction industry with high machine handling content
  • Operational background with significant experience of mobile plant, preferably gained in a high hazard materials handling/quarrying/construction type of environment.
  • Experience of developing, implementing and maintaining management systems including audit and reviews and interfacing with all certification bodies
  • NEBOSH Certificate as a minimum but NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) preferable
  • Experience in Environmental and Quality Management beneficial
  • CDM experience preferable
  • Ability to interface with enforcement bodies in a credible and professional manner
  • Comfortable in all environments from mess room to board room and have the ability and inter personal skills to communicate and influence at all levels of the organisation
  • Passionate about SHEQ and delivering improvement
  • Work with the business leadership team and the functional leadership team to ensure effective SHEQ systems are in place within the business unit to deliver the eight key safety principles as follows:

Compliance, visible, clear organisational/accountabilities/responsibilities, commitment, engages, living the policies, creating a SHE performance based culture. Aware and intolerant of poor standards, accredited.

Hazards and risks identified and assessed, safe systems of work in place, standards/rules and procedures to support, change management systems in place to deal with new hazards and risks. Effective communication systems.
